Open to Work

I'm currently open to work, including part-time, full-time, freelance, remote, hybrid, and in-person postions.  I'm interested in working as a developer or in a relatated area like project management, teaching / tutoring, or IT.

Freelance & Consulting Services

I'm currently offering freelance services in a few different areas.  I've been teaching piano lessons in person and online through my independent piano studio Dave Long Music since 2020.  Since 2023, I've also started offering services related to computer programming and building web sites such as web development, web design, content generation, and writing.

Background in Programming & Websites

I've had an interest in computers and the internet since I was young.  When I began my piano studio in 2020, the first thing I did was make a web site.  Working with this site and building a small business from scratch by developing a presence on the internet eventually dovetailed with my interest in web development.

Since the fall of 2022, I've been seriously studying web development and computer programming.  I began learning to program with python.  I next branched out into HTML, CSS, and Javascript, mostly focusing on front-end development.  I've since explored a number of other languages including Go, C, PHP, and Lua.  I'm also familiar with some web development frameworks such as Hugo and Astro. I'm most comfortable at this point working with Python and Javascript, along with HTML and CSS, although I'm always eager to learn new technical skills, programming languages, and frameworks.

Background in Music & Education

I’ve always had an interest in music.  I began to study music as a child, and I'm still learning, teaching, and playing music today. I have learned to play piano, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, drum set, and percussion.  Since around, 2010 I have been focusing my musical pursuits on classical and jazz piano.

I'm fortunate to have had the chance to study with world-class pianist and teacher Seymour Bernstein in New York City.  I have been studying with Seymour for about 10 years now.  I have learned so much from him about piano technique, the classical repertoire, interpreting written music, and piano playing in general. It’s always gratifying to pass along what I’ve learned from Seymour and my other teachers.

Law Practice and other Work Experience

In 2005, I went to law school.  I graduated from St. John's with dean's list honors and was a member of the law review.  After graduating, I practiced law for a few years before deciding to pursue other interests.

I am a recent graduate of Hack Upstate’s Careers in Code Bootcamp in Syracuse NY, where I learned full stack web development. This started me on what I envision as a career of continuous learning. I am currently learning Python and Django on my own and participating in a Data Basics course.

I am ready for a more interesting and challenging career that uses my new skills and allows me to apply my problem-solving abilities on interesting projects. My long-term goal is a career that combines my background in linguistics with coding knowledge, such as working on machine translation systems, speech recognition and speech synthesis systems, semantic search systems, or computer aided language learning systems. To that end I am interested in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning.

I was introduced to the Hudson Valley tech community through participation in the virtual HVTechFest 2021. I am looking forward to the upcoming Data Visualization with Python course here at OpenHub Project!
