Introduction to Information Architecture - IA 101

Information is the material we consume in digital and physical spaces. Understanding how to organize it based on human mental models and behavior is essential to creating a sense of place in all of our information environments. To gain this understanding, we turn to Information Architecture. In this course, you will learn what Information Architecture (IA) is, why it’s important, and how to manipulate its three core components, content, context, and human understanding, to create better websites, applications, and more. 
This course covers Information Architecture basics, designing for findability and meaning, sourcing and evaluating content, understanding human information needs, and tools for visualizing information architecture.

Course Structure (15 hours)

  1. Week 1 - Defining IA, why it’s important, etc
  2. Week 2 - Designing for Findability and Meaning
  3. Week 3 - Sourcing and Evaluating Content
  4. Week 4 - Understanding Human Information Needs
  5. Week 5 - An introduction to tools for visualizing information architecture

This course is best for business owners and web/software professionals who want to create websites, applications, or information environments in which people can find and use information more easily. This leads to more human engagements, higher conversion rates, and lower overall costs.

Prerequisite

This is a five-workshop series, three hours each. No previous experience is needed, but basic business experience is desired.
