OpenHub’s Values: What We Believe

OpenHub was inspired by the vision and opportunity to bring people together around technology. But that's more than just a mission statement; it informs the values that guide us every day.

OpenHub was created to be a place where people can support each other and achieve their dreams by building and collaborating with each other. We create a welcoming atmosphere for anyone, and strive to foster connections and form a thriving ecosystem of tech and startup innovation in our community.

To learn more about who we are, what we do, and how our values guide our work, read on.

What is OpenHub?

OpenHub is a community-driven effort that offers a variety of programs and courses, meet-ups, and activities. These events are designed for anyone who's looking to broaden their horizons or find their niche within the tech industry. There are also opportunities for professionals to network and find new opportunities outside of their current field. The goal is to promote social cohesion, entrepreneurship, mutual empowerment, and civic engagement.

OpenHub is based out of Newburgh, NY, and we are deeply invested in our community and dedicated to fostering the Hudson Valley's next generation of innovators

What do we believe?

At the heart of our mission and programming is the belief that truly mastering a skill means engaging with certain values.

Mastering coding, for example, takes more than just proficiency with computer science, programming language, and best practices. We believe true innovators are naturally curious, creative, self-actualizing problem solvers. So our approach to teaching technical skills like coding places a focus on leadership and self-exploration.

OpenHub is a space where people can show their true selves, share their honest feelings and be open with one another. When we're able to be vulnerable with others, we can have a more honest and authentic relationship. We also learn that openness is an essential part of any meaningful connection.

We are more self-critical and judgmental of ourselves than we are of others. This is because we think our flaws make us unworthy to be seen by the world. Acknowledging these feelings and not rejecting them helps to overcome these feelings, and unleash our bold, unique bravery.

The OpenHub community aims to encourage and empower. When we explore our reason, we explore our gifts, and failure becomes simply a natural part of playful experimentation.

We can all be game-changers

Many of us learned at an early age to suppress our voices -- to not be the center of attention. Some of us learned that, to be successful in the world, we had to play the game. Sit down. Be quiet. Go with the program. Don’t rock the boat. Who are you to change the world? Who are you to have influence? Why You?

We believe in a simple answer: You’re YOU!

Your life is a gift. You have the power to shape it -- in fact, you do shape it, even if you don’t mean to, and even if you aren’t aware of doing so. If you aren’t living in alignment with your authentic, brave, valuable self … if you are not allowing yourself the space to let your voice be heard … if you’re denying the rest of us the benefit of your unique point-of-view … isn’t that arrogance, instead of humility?

The most humble, and brave, thing that you can do is to allow your inner game-changer the tools and opportunity to be seen by the world.

At OpenHub, we believe technology can provide those tools and opportunities.

Conclusion

These values and ideas help us create a safe and supportive environment, and encourage curiosity, self-efficacy, and self-actualization.

We are all learning, after all. Learning from each other. Learning from this journey. Together. At OpenHub, we believe acknowledging our shared journeys of learning is the best way to build trust, support, teams, and, ultimately, innovative communities.
