Learning Tech as Pathway Out of Poverty

This article in NYT raises more questions than answers, but it highlight the trends:

  1. Tech jobs can be seen as the new manufacturing jobs, it is fast growing sector
  2. Mastering code and applying it in business holds the promise of becoming the modern path to the middle class for people without four-year college degrees. 
  3. While teaching coding we typically teach both technical and “soft skills” like teamwork, confidence while speaking in public, feel comfortable asking questions in a tech-work culture.

Studying Web Development is a challenging journey with a steep learning curve. It is not for everybody, it works for motivated people acceptig challenges. Taught by practicing developers in a high-support, high-expectations environment, it can open new opportunities for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds and  career changing adults.
